Frequently Asked Questions
Do all companies pay dividends?
Whether a company pays dividends depends on its dividend policy, profitability, cash flow, and growth strategy. Some companies choose to reinvest profits instead of paying dividends, which could result in potential capital gains over the long term.
Are dividends the only way companies can reward investors?
Companies can also reward investors by reinvesting profits to grow the business or buying back their own shares through share buybacks, which may increase the share price over time.
How can investors qualify for dividends?
Investors need to own shares on or before the last day to trade to qualify for a dividend. On EasyEquities, both full and fractional shareholders are eligible to receive dividend payments.
What happens to shares on an ex-dividend date?
On the ex-dividend date (the day after the last date to trade), the share price typically adjusts downward by roughly the value of the dividend. Investors who buy on this day do not qualify for the dividend payout, while investors who owned shares on or before this date will qualify for the dividend.
Who qualifies to take part in other events such as spin-offs?
Both full and fractional shareholders who own shares on or before the last day to trade qualify to participate. The final eligibility date is announced once the event is confirmed.
How much dividend tax do I pay on dividends from different countries?
The amount of dividend tax you pay depends on where the dividend originates and whether it is treated as local or foreign tax.
Please note that we credit the gross dividend amount to your account and reflect any withholding tax as a separate debit. In other words, we do not only credit the net amount received - the gross amount and the actual tax deducted are shown separately.
Dividend withholding tax is generally deducted after payment and can vary depending on:
• the country from which the dividend is paid; and
• whether South Africa has a tax treaty in place with that country, and whether you qualify for any reduced withholding rate.
Withholding tax rates typically range between approximately 5% and 30%, depending on the jurisdiction and applicable tax treaty provisions.
United States dividends: US dividends are subject to withholding tax deducted at source. South African residents may be eligible for a reduced withholding rate under the US–South Africa tax treaty, but this reduced rate is generally only applied where the investor has submitted a valid W-8BEN form. The W-8BEN is an IRS document used to certify non-US status and to claim the treaty rate where applicable.
Because withholding tax rates and treaty applications can change, the applicable rate will depend on the rules in force in the country of origin at the time the dividend is paid, and the documentation on record.
What happens when a company delists?
When a company delists, its shares are removed from the stock exchange and can no longer be traded on that market. Trading in the stock may be suspended before the delisting date, either before or after the last day to trade, depending on the reason for the delisting.
Once delisted, the shares are removed from the EasyEquities platform and can no longer be traded there. Investors may still own the shares, but selling or transferring them typically becomes more difficult and may require alternative arrangements outside the platform.
How are interest payouts taxed compared to dividends?
Interest and coupon payouts are generally treated as taxable income and may be subject to income tax based on your personal tax rate, rather than Dividend Withholding Tax (DWT). The exact tax treatment can depend on your individual tax profile. It is advisable to always seek advice from a qualified tax practitioner.
How can I qualify for the coupon and interest payouts?
To qualify for coupon or interest payouts, you must hold the eligible instrument before the last date to trade set by the issuer.
